Course overview

The British Empire played a major role in shaping the modern world and the lives of millions of people both at home and overseas. How did it come about?

Course description

Technically the Regency lasted a mere nine years from 1811 to 1820, from George III’s sad decline to George IV’s coronation but culturally it is considered to cover the longer period 1795 to 1837. It is this latter period that we will consider. Ranging across art, architecture, politics, social change and of course a little bit of Regency high fashion this course promises a fascinating insight into late 18th and early 19th century English life.
