Still life is a unique genre of photography, which depicts inanimate objects or subject matters devoid of people. On this course you will learn how to look closely and consider ways of making the ‘ordinary’ appear interesting and extraordinary! You will experiment with composition, lighting and set-up, whilst considering how objects, possessions and natural forms symbolise some kind of story. You will learn how to read and discuss images with others, reflecting on your own images, when considering visual communication.

Course description

On this fascinating and inspiring course, you will learn how to look closely and consider ways of making the ‘ordinary’ appear interesting and extraordinary! You will experiment with composition, lighting and set-up, whilst considering how objects, possessions and natural forms symbolise some kind of story. You will learn how to read and discuss images with others, reflecting on your own images, when considering visual communication. As the course progresses, you will be introduced to the different styles and approaches used by professional photographers when taking Still life photographs. You will have the opportunity to learn about inspiration and how to experiment with different subject matter within this exciting and thought-provoking genre, including Vanitas, Nature and Social documentary. By the end of the course, you will be able to describe and explain compositions based on your own personal interests and discuss and evaluate progress and successes in your photographic work. You will learn how to organise your work and save on a computer and will also create a PowerPoint presentation of your photography.
