Course overview

During this friendly and creative course, you will continue to use your sketchbook and art practice as a starting point to develop your work. You will have the chance to gain more confidence in your unique artwork by trying out different materials and techniques to create bigger scale work. You will be able to use the creative experiments carried out in your sketchbooks and on paper to progress your art practice by using your preferred techniques and materials. The many techniques, materials, themes, concepts and artists that influence your artwork will be crystallised into more finished pieces during this course.

Course description

During this inspiring course, you will focus on contrast and composition by using collage in your art pieces. You will also consider how other artists use contrast and composition in their work to direct the gaze of the viewer to the focal point in their images. You will use the Gelli plate printing technique to create unique collage papers, which you can then use to make larger scale work. Initially, the work will incorporate monochromatic ideas gathered on the previous course. Simple colour schemes will bring in fresh approaches, inspired by a still life provided each week, or from your preferred influences. As the course progresses, you will learn how to use the language of art to evaluate your artwork for inclusion in the summer show. During this course, you will visit RAMM museum and Exeter Phoenix Galleries to view contemporary and classical art to broaden your creative outlooks.

This Studio Practice class will take place in a light and airy studio that is a welcoming and safe space for everyone, where support and connection with others is central to producing an atmosphere of calm creativity.
