Course overview

One of the reminders of Victorian ingenuity at the seaside, and some inland towns is the much-loved cliff railway. Discover the history of the Cliff Railways in England and Wales, with an introduction of their origins and development and the communities they served. Built in often dramatic locations with spectacular views, they offer the excitement of a precipitous journey down a steep incline. Come and join this illustrated course as we follow the story of these passenger carrying railways, from 1875 to the present day. This course is suitable for those with both little and some knowledge of the subject. To note down key points, it is suggested that you bring a notebook.

Course description

The course will provide a study of the social, technical and economic drivers that drove the provision of cliff railways and for some, the reasons for their demise. . To explain the different methods of operation – water and electricity. This course is idea for those who want to spend time learning something new from the comfort of their own home. There will be a range of different teaching and learning methods to encourage you to be actively involved in your learning. You will be invited to undertake work to support your course outside of the class and in particular there will be an assignment that will involve studying your local cliff railway and report back your findings to the rest of the class.

You may use photographs if you have any, otherwise the tutor will draw examples from his extensive collection. Sessions will be delivered through PowerPoint presentation, discussion and debate, with students encouraged to contribute and enjoy the course. A range of handouts will be provided on Canvas. On completion of the course you will:-
