Learn to have in-depth interactions in BSL. Embrace inclusive communication and help dismantle communication barriers in society. Knowing how to sign can help you in a variety of situations where you need to interact with deaf people. This BSL course is suitable for you if you need to communicate with deaf people or people with hearing impairments. It can help you in a variety of contexts, for example in a voluntary or community role, or simply in social interactions. This course is aimed at advanced-level learners who have a solid base in British Sign Language (BSL). If you are not at an advanced level yet, you can take a beginner’s or improver’s BSL course.

Course description

This advanced British Sign Language course covers a wide variety of topics to help you communicate freely. Learn to sign about everyday topics, for example, discussing transport and giving directions. Further develop your skill at finger spelling. Continue to expand your understanding of the issues that affect deaf people.

The WEA prides itself on creating a safe and friendly environment to learn BSL. We’re sure you will feel comfortable practising your skills with the tutor and other members of the group.

When you complete this advanced BSL course, you could learn other inclusive language programmes. You might be interested in taking a course in Makaton.

If you need to learn BSL for professional reasons, you can study for an accredited qualification. You could take a level 1 award in deaf awareness to gain accredited skills for care jobs and support work.

Please be aware that you’ll need access to the internet to take this advanced British Sign Language course. Your tutor will upload useful materials to Canvas, the WEA’s digital learning platform.

Most of our courses are government funded but if you don't qualify or need alternative financial help to access them then let us know.
