Partnering with us case study: ESOL for work

When Bilstein Group, a leader in the manufacturing industry, wanted to improve communication for maintaining a safe work environment they turned to the WEA for the solution. Many of their employees had English as a second language and we worked together to deliver an ESOL for Health and Safety course that met their needs.

Through this tailored program, Bilstein Group employees gained vital language skills, enabling them to understand and communicate health and safety procedures. But it was more than just understanding to read signs. Learners grew in confidence and started to form stronger working relationships, overcoming the language barriers that had prevented them from communicating with their colleagues.

Partnering with the WEA opens doors to endless possibilities for your business. Equip your employees with the skills they need to excel in their roles, create a positive work environment, and become a driving force in your organisation’s success.

hi I'm Simon Parkinson I'm the chief

0:02

exec of the WEA we're the largest

0:04

charitable provider of adult learning

0:07

across England and Scotland I'm

0:09

delighted to be in Chesterfield today

0:10

here with the bill Stein group we've

0:13

been working with them to support

0:14

workers whose English is their second

0:17

language so we call that Esau and to

0:20

help encourage health and safety in the

0:21

workplace and it's done a tremendous

0:23

amount of good for the employees and for

0:26

Bilstein group and also it's had wider

0:28

impacts so let's go and see what we've

0:30

been doing

0:33

so we decided to look at Esau for health

0:36

and safety and because it's more to do

0:39

with our Workforce and the balance that

0:41

we've got we've currently got around 25

0:42

of our Workforce who have English as a

0:45

second language and we felt that there

0:47

was some um barriers to their

0:49

understanding and we wanted to make sure

0:51

that we did something to address that

0:53

we manage people from the front line and

0:55

when we're delivering health and safety

0:56

briefs every morning every afternoon

0:57

which we do daily you kind of see some

1:00

people are kind of vacant and I don't

1:03

see that anymore the the actually get

1:05

involved and they're asking questions

1:07

and I it's massive from the valve and

1:10

for team building you were kind enough

1:12

to tailor the course to our needs and

1:15

you're prepared to come on site once a

1:17

week and so that our teams didn't have

1:20

to travel anywhere you made it with

1:22

sport for what we needed to have

1:23

delivered and it was fantastic and I

1:25

think the participants were quite sad

1:27

when it ended to be fair I think they

1:28

were carried on indefinitely really

1:31

um but yeah it was enjoyable for them

1:33

all

1:34

in the past I was struggling with

1:36

English very bad

1:38

and now I'm more confident by myself to

1:42

speaking here and outside the same also

1:45

outside of work as well yeah because I

1:47

have kids and I go in park and I speak

1:49

with the parents and it's much better

1:53

the English course give me the the good

1:56

starts you know to improve my English I

2:00

think so I speak well not maybe not very

2:03

well but not perfect but I I can't I

2:06

more understand and I can speak

2:09

I happy people understand me as well we

2:13

go to anywhere is a lot of people there

2:15

we much better speaking and everybody

2:19

else that English lesson is very good

2:22

very good very high quality lessons

2:24

we're all happy that one and we were

2:28

talking about a lot of people is

2:31

everybody happy

2:34

it's helped with engagement and the fact

2:37

that they've done it as a team they may

2:38

have sort of just known each other and

2:40

passing downstairs before but now

2:41

they've gone through something together

2:43

and you know they've got that common

2:45

Bond and it's just had so much with with

2:47

with the team downstairs the motivations

2:50

improved The Works improved and they're

2:54

just so more engaged as well investing

2:57

in people you know invest in the talent

2:59

what you've got on side your staff

3:00

turnover is going to come down across

3:02

the train is going to come down

3:04

definitely do it if you've not invested

3:06

in English courses if you've got you

3:07

know multinationals on your site then

3:10

invest in your people it's well worth it

3:14

developed into other roles because

3:15

they've got more confidence so it's

3:17

helped us as a Workforce we've got a

3:19

wider pool of people that we can look at

3:21

for other roles and it's just been a

3:23

win-win really for us and for them

3:26

this is a huge operation it's

3:28

pan-european you know headquartered in

3:30

Germany it's an organization that's

3:32

growing and it's an organization that's

3:34

still willing to invest in the UK we've

3:36

seen some great leadership

3:38

um in action and you get a real sense

3:40

that you know the team are together they

3:43

understand what's expected of them and

3:45

there is that real values driven

3:47

approach so great that it's it's a good

3:50

partnership I'm pleased that it's had

3:51

the impact it's had already I just hope

3:54

we can do more and more with Bilstein

3:56

and with you know other similar

3:58

companies as well
