" I have a background in care, having helped several members of my own family, so it has felt like a natural transition. I was a little nervous when I enrolled onto the programme, as I was leaving my comfort zone. However, the Step into Care course, led by Veronica, supported me immensely in building my confidence and preparing for my new role.

The course teaches you the skills that you’ll actually need in the real workplace. After completing a placement with Diverse Active Living, I have successfully gained the role of a support worker in a day care service, supporting adults with various mental and physical disabilities, encouraging socialisation, interaction and supporting with basic skills. I’ve been fortunate to have a number of mentors who have recognised my potential and supported my development."

I'm looking forward to a long and wonderful career within the care sector. I now feel like I'm pursuing my purpose. So, thank you to Step into Care for taking a chance on me.

"My new role not only offers the chance to assist amazing people, but I also get to use my creative skills, such as photography. Sometimes, you need to think quickly to distract clients, like singing a song or telling a story. So, there are no regrets of moving away from film and media. I feel like I'm learning something different every single day.

When a tragedy like dementia happens to a family, it’s so hard to deal with. The way that experienced carers come in and navigate this difficult time is just awe-inspiring. As a carer, you get the chance to brighten people’s day. Don’t get me wrong, it’s definitely a challenging occupation. You need to be a strong character, with thick skin at times.

Not everybody has the compassion, patience and nurturing skills to provide the level of care that people need. We’ve all seen during COVID-19 just how essential carers are in society at the moment. Although I also think carers should be paid more for the essential work we do!

I'm looking forward to a long and wonderful career within the care sector. I now feel like I'm pursuing my purpose. So, thank you to Step into Care for taking a chance on me."
