Course overview

This is a General English class aimed at Pre-Intermediate (or high elementary (A2/B1)) level learners. This course is for those whose first language is NOT English and in it we will practice all four major skills in each session to develop reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Although this is a low-level English course, learners should be able to follow a simple conversation and read simple lines of text prior to joining so that they will not struggle. Lessons will be delivered face-to-face using a range of teacher led and freer interactive activities to build learners’ proficiency and confidence in the English language.

Course description

In this five-week ESOL course, (English for Speakers of Other Languages), learners will practice their reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills through the topics of: Holidays; Moments in history; Pop of the past; a story of suspense; travel and perceptions (optimism vs pessimism). Areas of grammar will be: past simple regular and irregular verbs; past continuous; questions with and without auxiliaries; so, because, but, although; going to, present continuous for future arrangements; will/won’t for predictions. Vocabulary will centre around holidays, prepositions of time and place (in, at, on), question words, pop music, verb phrases, phrases using look, opposite verbs. Students will engage in pair work, games, written and verbal exercises. There will also be a written assignment in which learners will write about a favourite photo using a given example as scaffolding. There will be a summative assessment at the end to help learners gauge their own progress and develop a degree of autonomy in their learning. It is hoped that learners will progress to the next course in the series upon successful completion.
