Course overview

This is a General English/Family Learning Class aimed at elementary (A1/A2) level learners. This course is for those whose first language is NOT English and in it we will practice all four major skills in each session to develop reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Although this is a low-level English course, learners should be able to recognise sounds of the English letters and read simple lines of text prior to joining so that they will not struggle. Lessons will be delivered face-to-face using a range of teacher led and freer interactive activities to build learners’ proficiency and confidence in the English language.

Course description

In this six-week ESOL course, (English for Speakers of Other Languages) learners will practice their reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills through the topics of neighbours, London and other cities, food and cooking and drink. Areas of grammar will be there was/ there were; present continuous; present simple vs present continuous; an/an & some/any; how much/how many; and quantifiers: a lot, not much. Vocabulary will centre around prepositions of place, verb phrases, places in a city, giving and receiving directions, food – countable & uncountable nouns and drinks. Students will engage in pair work, games, written and verbal exercises. There will also be a written assignment in which learners will read and then write a postcard using a given example as scaffolding. There will be a summative assessment at the end to help learners gauge their own progress and develop a degree of autonomy in their learning. It is hoped that learners will progress to the next course in the series upon successful completion.
