Course overview

This course introduces students to the foundational skills of calligraphy and hand lettering. Starting with the history and evolution of both art forms, students will learn about essential tools and materials. They will practice basic strokes, letter formations, and techniques for both lowercase and uppercase alphabets. By the end of this term, students will be able to create simple projects like greeting cards or quote art, utilising basic layouts and compositions. The focus is on developing a strong understanding of the basics and building confidence and creating a calligraphic sketchbook.

Course description

Explore the essentials of calligraphy and hand lettering, focusing on building a solid foundation. Students will start with an overview of the history and evolution of both art forms, gaining an appreciation for their cultural significance. The course covers essential tools and materials, including different types of pens, nibs, brushes, inks, papers and a calligraphic sketchbook. Through guided practice, students will learn basic strokes, letter formations, and techniques for both lowercase and uppercase alphabets. Instruction on proper pen grip, posture, and pressure control will help students create smooth, consistent letterforms. By the end of this term, students will be able to create simple projects such as greeting cards or quote art, applying basic layout and composition principles. Regular assignments and peer reviews will reinforce learning and build confidence. This term aims to instil a strong understanding of the basics, providing a solid groundwork for more advanced techniques in subsequent terms.
